Early Promise
William Hague grew up in Rotheram and made the news at the young age of 16 when he confidently addressed Conservatives at their annual conference in 1977, his self-assured nature made a big impression, only foreshadowing what would lie ahead for the ambitious teenager. William Hague went on to study Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Oxford and served as President of the Oxford Union, he graduated with a first class honours then went on to get a Master’s in Business Administration. He took his first big step into politics when he was elected to Parliament in a by-election as a member of the safe conservative seat for Richmond in 1989. At only 27 years old he was the youngest Conservative member of Parliament.
William Hague’s Political Career
Following his initial election to parliament, William Hague was elected a further five times and only two years later he was appointed the Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Chancellor of the Exchequer. He continued to climb the ranks, first becoming Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department of Social Security, then Minister of State with responsibility for Social Security and Disabled People, while in this position he was responsible for introducing the landmark Disability Discrimination Act in 1995. His strong views and work ethic also soon found him being elected Secretary of State for Wales at 34 years old. From there his career only reached new heights, he was elected as the leader of the Conservative Party and credited with leading a successful campaign against the country joining the euro. After resigning he became Foreign Secretary during one of the most turbulent times in recent history. During his time in the position he opened embassies across Africa and Latin America, helped to revitalize the foreign and commonwealth office and established the Diplomatic Academy. He stepped down from front-line politics in 2015 and has since pursued several business ventures and worked as an advisor.

As a key figure in the world of politics, William Hague has received a variety of awards and recognition for his work. He was awarded a life peerage in 2015 and granted arms in 2016. William Hague also The Spectator’s Parliamentarian of the Year Award in 1998, was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and won History Book of the Year for ‘William Pitt the Younger’ in 2005.
