Early Promise
Born in Chatham, Kent, Steve Brown had a passion for sport from a young age that was heavily influenced by being raised in a family of Crystal Palace supporters. Upon attending a game, he was inspired by seeing the wealth of support and cheers that the players received and found that it was something he wanted to. Attending Borden Grammar School, he took the chance to pursue a variety of sports, representing the school and honing his skills in multiple areas such as cricket, football and cross-country. His other love was also that of the countryside, enjoying being out in nature and exploring, Steve Brown also aspired to be a wildlife presenter. His life took a sudden twist when he was 23 years old and fell from a first-floor balcony, ultimately dislocating one of his cervical vertebrae and trapping his spinal cord. As a result, he was paralysed and started rehabilitation during which he encountered the world of wheelchair rugby, an event he says was a turning point.
Steve Brown’s Sporting and Television Career
After leaving the hospital in 2005, Steve Brown set his sights on wheelchair rugby and started training with the London Wheelchair Rugby Club. His dedication and potential shone through and caught the attention of the head coach of the Great Britain squad. Only a year later he was awarded a place on the squad and his talents grew even further, leading to him being part of the 2007 team that won gold at the IWRF European Championships. From then on, his career reached new heights, his determination eventually earning him a place at the 2012 London Paralympics where he captained his team to 5th place. Steve Brown subsequently retired from the sport after the games but continues to enjoy playing as well as coaching at the Canterbury Hellfire Wheelchair Rugby Club. Since retirement he has gone on to pursue his other passion of television presenting, first in the field of sport before going on to present on The One Show and Springwatch. In 2017, Steve Brown became a member of the Countryfile presenting team, ultimately achieving his childhood dream of being a wildlife presenter.
