Early Promise
Born in Newcastle, Cheryl grew up in a council estate and her first taste of performing when she appeared in a British Gas advert at seven years old. This gave her inspiration to pursue performing arts and she soon began dancing, attending the Royal Ballet School in the summer and appearing in various dance recitals on tv shows like ‘Gimme 5’. However, it was when she auditioned for talent show ‘Popstars: The Rivals’ in 2002 that Cheryl’s aspirations started to become a reality, with her subsequently becoming the first to qualify as a member of a girl group. Cheryl was eventually joined by Kimberley Walsh, Nadine Coyle, Nicola Roberts and Sarah Harding, forming the group Girls Aloud.
Cheryl’s Music Career
After winning the competition, Girls Aloud released their debut single ‘Sound of the Underground’ which soared to the top of the charts and became the Christmas number one. Girls Aloud went on to release five studio albums and sold over 4.3 million singles and 4 million albums in the UK over the course of their career. Their whirlwind rise to fame was recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records who named them as ‘Most Successful Reality TV Group’ in the 2007 issue. When Girls Aloud ultimately split in 2009, Cheryl went on to appear as a judge on the X Factor on the fifth, sixth and seventh series. She released her first solo material when she provided vocals for Will.i.am’s track ‘Heartbreaker’ before releasing her debut album the following year titled ‘3 Words’. The record spent two weeks at the top of the charts and was certified platinum, the lead single ‘Fight for This Love’ also climbed to number one in the UK and Ireland. Her second album ‘Messy Little Raindrops’ was released in 2010 and debuted at number one. Cheryl has overall released four albums as a solo artist and was the first female solo artist to have five number one singles in the UK.

Cheryl has amassed a dedicated following of fans and established herself as a prominent figure in the UK music scene as a solo artist, judge and member of Girls Aloud. This has led to a succession of awards and recognition for her work, with a variety of accolades to her name. This includes multiple Glamour Women of the Year Awards, several BRIT Award nominations, two BT Digital Music Awards and five BBC Radio 1 Teen Award nominations.
