David Moorcroft OBE is a celebrated Great Britain middle-distance and long-distance runner who won the hearts of the nation when he sped across the finish line at the 1982 Bislett Games in Oslo, placing first and conquering the world record for the 5,000 m by an incredible 5.39 seconds. His overall time was an impressive 13:00.41.
This amazing success was reinforced by a long career of running that helped to cement David Moorcroft as one of the leading British distance runners. A versatile athlete that could alternate between 5,000 m and 1,500 m with a refined ease, David Moorcroft had previously been crowned winner at the Commonwealth Games in 1978 as well as emerging triumphant at the European Cup in 1981 for the 5000 m.
After his fantastic run in 1982, David Moorcroft OBE then went on to win gold at the Brisbane Commonwealths at the 5,000 m. He also managed to break the European and British record at the 3,000 m race that has only quite recently been broken by Mo Farah in 2016.
With experience competing in three Olympic Games, David Moorcroft’s final time running at the prestigious event came in Los Angeles in 1984 when he unfortunately suffered an injury that resulted in him placing last. However, this did not hurt his spirit and he went on to compete for two more national titles, one running the 3000 m in 1989 and another in Belfast where he broke a British veterans world record at the age of 40.
Since retiring David Moorcroft has been awarded an MBE and subsequently an OBE in 1999. Over the years since he has shared his running wisdom on both television and radio, covering athletic events from 1983 to 1997. He also helped develop the Coventry Sports Foundation which has helped to fund a number of major sports facilities and other youth and sports projects in the area. Additionally David Moorcroft OBE went on to provide track and field expertise for the Canadian Broadcast Company for the 2008 and 2012 Olympics as well as becoming Chief Executive of the British Athletic Federation in 1997 where he stayed until his resignation in 2006.
