Early Promise
Tom Surgey was raised in Sussex, and took his first steps into the world of hospitality when he took initiative at the age of fourteen and looked for a job at the local pub. His first role was in the kitchen peeling vegetables at the weekends and after school. Forming an interest in the pub industry he stayed on in the field, working behind bars throughout his youth and college years and building on his knowledge of wine and spirits. After finishing college, Tom Surgey went on to work at members only club The Ivy in London. This sparked off the next move in his career as he formed his passion for wine and began being called upon to talk wine with guests, offering recommendations and sharing his knowledge. To polish his expertise even further Tom Surgey also started his WSAT qualifications, going on to achieve a diploma qualification.
Tom Surgey’s Wine and Presenting Career
As his career flourished Tom Surgey’s knowledge of wine expanded even further. He was soon being asked on to give his expertise during the Christmas period at Annabel’s Cellars under Berkley Square. From there on his ambitions grew and he left the restaurant industry to focus on a career exclusively in wine. His new path was cemented when he joined pioneering sparkling wine company Ridgeview in 2014 as Sales & Business Development Director. Alongside this he was also invited to join the team of Three Wine Men, consisting of Oz Clarke, Tim Atkin and Olly Smith. The trio tour around the UK putting on talks and large-scale wine tastings, Tom Surgey was first introduced to conduct masterclasses at the events and has since gone on to become a staple in their unit. He joined their official line up in 2019. Continuing to make his name in the industry, Tom Surgey has also added the role of radio presenter to his list, with a regular monthly slot on BBC Sussex & Surrey radio talking about the world of wine.
Tom Surgey’s Other Work and Achievements
As an established wine expert, Tom Surgey has begun to be recognised by various organisations for his work. In 2019, he was shortlisted for the Julian Bind trophy for Outstanding Achievement in the Wine Industry by the International Wine & Spirit Competition.
