Ronan O’Gara was born in San Diego in America before his family moved to Ireland when he was six months old. He first started to shape his rugby career when he attended Presentation Brothers college in Cork and proved his talents, winning the Munster Junior Cup medal and then the Senior Cup medal. After this he continued his winning streak, attending University College Cork and being awarded an All-Ireland Under 20 medal in 1996 before graduating in 1999 with a BA and master’s degree. It was not long before Ronan O’Gara was making his debut for Munster, first stepping on to the field in 1997 and debuting at the Heineken Cup the same year.
Ronan O’Gara Rugby Career
With his talents on the field fuelling his career forward, Ronan O’Gara played for Munster for over sixteen years. He helped them achieve a number of titles and wins, including being part of the team that won the 2002-2003 Celtic League, being a vital element in their 2006 Heineken Cup win and then achieving a second win in 2008. Ronan O’Gara was also part of the team in several triumphant highlights such when he captained them to victory against the Wasps in a Heineken Cup pool match and also helped them beat their arch-rival Leinster in the Magners League Grand Final 2011. In 2013, Ronan O’Gara became Munsters most capped player ever, months later he announced his retirement. Alongside his success at Munsters Ronan O’Gara also played for Ireland, winning his first cap against Scotland in the 2000 Six Nations. Throughout his career playing for Ireland he became team captain and added two European Cups and numerous domestic trophies to his portfolio.

Ronan O’Gara has blazed a trail through the rugby world and has countless trophies, records and awards to commemorate this. Upon his retirement, he had played for Ireland more than anyone else in history and holds the record for the most points scored, he is also the sixth most capped international player in the world and was credited as the player who had made the greatest contribution to European rugby over the first 15 years of the Heineken Cup. Since retiring Ronan O’Gara has worked as a coach for Racing 92, Crusaders and La Rochelle. In 2018, he was inducted into the Rugby Hall of Fame.
