Born in Alberta, Canada, to an English father and Welsh mother meant that Owen Hargreaves had the option of being eligible to play for England, Wales and Canada. As a youth growing up in North America he initially was interested in more sports like ice hockey and baseball but at the age of fifteen was inspired to start football, following in the footsteps of his father who had previously had minor success in the sport. Owen Hargreaves kicked off his foray into football playing for Calgary Foothills before moving to Bayern Munich at sixteen years old playing in the Under-19 team for a few years, helping them reach the German Championship final. While playing for Bayern Munich, Owen Hargreaves established himself as a strong defensive midfielder and cemented his place on the team.
Owen Hargreaves’ Football Career
With his career taking off, Owen Hargreaves went from strength to strength during his time at Bayern Munich, making his debut in his first Bundesliga match where the team became champions before going on to also win the UEFA Champions League. He soon became a regular for Bayern Munich and remained at the club for over seven years until his transfer to Manchester United in 2007. Following his signing for the club, Owen Hargreaves helped contribute to their Premier League and UEFA Champion’s League wins in his first season. The midfielder also played for the England Team, and was selected for the Euro 2004 and World Cup 2006 squads, his performance in the latter earning him praise and frequent man of the match commendations. However, soon his impressive career trajectory was hampered by a succession of injuries and he subsequently left Manchester United in 2011 after his contract expired. Once he had reached full fitness again Owen Hargreaves released videos detailing his health and ability, attracting the attention of potential clubs before eventually signing with Manchester City where he remained for a year. Owen Hargreaves ultimately retired from football in 2012 due to the consequences of a long-term knee injury.
Owen Hargreaves’ Awards and Honours
With an extensive football career behind him, Owen Hargreaves has received a variety of awards and honours for his skills on the pitch. His titles include four German League titles while playing for Bayern Munich, two UEFA Champions League titles on two different teams and the Intercontinental Cup in 2001. As a player one of his notable career successes was winning both England Player of the Year and England Player of the World Cup in FA Polls, becoming the first person to win both in the same year.
