Early Promise
Born and raised in Córdoba, Ossie Ardiles developed his love for football from a young age, playing for the Argentine Sports Club Insituto de Cordoba. He also built a great reputation playing football on the streets in his youth and was bestowed the nickname Piton aka Python by his brother, for his sharp, snake-like dribbling skills. As he moved his way up through the ranks, he abandoned his pursuit of a law degree in order to embark on career as a professional footballer. He made his mark early, being named as Argentine sports magazine, El Gràfico’s best player of the interior in 1974.
Ossie Ardiles’ Football Career
As Ossie Ardiles’ career began to gain traction, he caught the attention of Club Atletico Belgrano, joining the team in 1974 before going on to play for Huracán from 1975 to 1978. Following this he also went on to play for Argentina and was part of the winning team at the World Cup in 1978, his skills and technique on the field made a big impression on the English crowds and made waves in football industry. These subsequent ripples had an apparent effect on Tottenham Hotspur who signed Ossie Ardiles to their team that same year. During his time at the club he helped them win the FA Cup in 1980-81 and the UEFA Cup in 1984. He spent ten seasons with the team. After leaving Tottenham Spurs in 1988 he went on to play for numerous teams including Blackburn Rovers, Swindon Town and Queens Park Rangers before stepping off the pitch to become manager for Swindon Town in 1989. Since then Ossie Ardiles has made his mark in management, implementing a new technique on field with the ‘samba style’ and ‘diamond formation’, he also assisted Swindon Town with achieving their highest ever league position. Since leaving them in 1991 Ossie Ardiles has managed countless teams, including returning to his career defining club Tottenham Hotspur as well as the Japanese club Shimizu S-Pulse and his former team Huracán.
Ossie Ardiles’ Awards and Records
Alongside his successful career as both a professional footballer and manager, Ossie Ardiles has also worked as a pundit for RTÉ sport during the coverage of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, sharing his expertise and knowledge. This experience and success throughout his career have also led to a number of awards and honours including being named as J. League Manager of the Year in 1998, winning the Golden Foot in 2013, being named as the only Argentinian in the Football League 100 Legends List and winning the FIFA World Cup 1978 playing for Argentina.
