Early Ambitions
Born in Norwich before moving to Nottingham at eight years old, Ed Balls went on to study Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Oxford University where he graduated with a first. His political interests were developed further when he joined the Labour club, while also signing up for the Conservative Association and Liberal club to take full advantage of the political resources offered to fuel his ambitions. Ed Balls then attended the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard, where he specialised in Economics. Following this, he became a teaching fellow at Harvard before joining the Financial Times in 1990 where he was the lead economic writer. His political career then took a big step when he was appointed as an economic advisor to Gordon Brown in 1994.
Ed Ball’s Political Career
After becoming economic advisor, Ed Balls career continued to reach new heights when Labour was voted into power at the 1997 election, eventually being appointed Chief Economic Advisor to the Treasury. In 2005, he was elected as an MP for the Normanton constituency before later being selected as a labour party candidate for the Morley and Outwood constituency and being elected for a seat in 2010. As well as this Ed Balls was made Economic Secretary to the treasury in 2006 after a Cabinet reshuffle, then promoted to Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families when Gordon Brown was elected prime minister in 2007. While in the position Ed Balls raised the UK education and training leaving age to 18, scrapped SAT tests for 14-year olds and oversaw the immediate dismissal of the Director of Children’s Services after the ‘Death of Baby P’ case. After Brown’s resignation as Prime Minister, Miliband appointed Ed Balls as Shadow Home Secretary in 2010 before being made Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer the following year. He remained in the position until he was unseated in the 2015 general election.
Ed Ball’s Other Projects
Alongside his extensive political career, Ed Balls has also found himself in the spotlight in other areas. This includes his appointment as chairman of Norwich City F.C. at the end of 2015, as well as taking part in various television shows such as ‘The Great Sport Relief Bake Off’ and ‘Would I Lie to You’. He also hosted a three-part documentary. ‘Travels in Trumpland with Ed Balls’ and was a contestant on series 14 of Strictly Come Dancing where he was eliminated on week 10.
